If controls are loose and there is no fear, such initiatives will die soon. Its a negative but true & sorry state of Pune / Rest of India.

In order to have an effective control, there has to be a strong political will to make new laws and to effect them, empower the law enforcement authorities like the traffic police, in order to make them TRUEly effective ensure they get a high pay and government and its ACB has to ensure that they dont receive bribes.
As regards people and their strong will to break the signal and other traffic related laws, we must check how licenses are issued and how they are MONITORed. Unless there is a point system like foreign countried which reduces points for faluts on part of the license holder and at times nulifies the license or makes it impossible for one to drive, the people wont feel afraid of breaking laws or deter.
An effective deterent comes from effective systems and not control alone. So its high time that Indian Traffic Control Authorities overhaul the entire system.

I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT THERE IS NO RULES & REGULATION OF TRAFFIC ARE FOLLOWD BY PEOPLE, ITS MY OBSERVATION, AS WELL AS POLICE PEOPLE ARE ALSO NOT THAT MUCH INTRESTED TO FOLLOW IT. ACTUALY POLICE ALSO DONT WANT THAT PEOPLE SHOULD FOLLOW THE RULES. OTHERWISE THEY COULD NOT ACHIEVE THEIR TARGET. ITS MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE THAT WHEN I WAS DRIVING, ON POUD RD NR MIT SCHOOL, PUNE I SAW PEOPLE WERE DRIVING THEIR VEHICLES IN NO ENTRY WITHOUT HESITATION, I WAS THE ONLY PERSON WHO SAW THE NO ENTRY BOARD & I WENT AHEAD TO GET TURN. WHEN I TURNN I SAW 10-12 POLICE PEOPLE WERE HOLDING PEOPLE WHO WERE COMING BY THE NO ENTRY RD,
THEY WRE NOT STOPING PEOPLE, BUT CATCHING THEM AFTER ENTERING & COLLECTING AS PER THEIR RULES?
ACTUALY THEY SHOULD STOP PEOPLE TO ENTER IN NO ENTRY SO THAT THEY COULD AVOID THE VEHICLE COLLISION& ACCIDENTS.
MY DRIVING EXPERIENCE IN PUNE IS VERY BAD. MANY PEOPLE HAVING NOT VALID DRIVING LICENCE, EVEN MINORS (AGE) ALSO DRIVES WITHOUT FEAR.
PUNE IS NOW CONJUSTED NOT ONLY BCOZ OF DEVELOPMENT & POPULATION BUT THE TRAFFIC IRRESPONSIBILITIES, & PEOPLE HAVE NO CONCERN OF OTHERS.
I HOPE SCHOOL CHILDEN MAY EDUCATE PEOPLE.
SORRY PUNE,BUT I AM NATIVE OF PUNE

    Strict Rules:

The Mopen/Car Driver looses licence for 1 week for first offence of speeding, redlight jumping, etc. FINE Rs 500/-

    2 offences - 1 month, Fine Rs 1000/-
    3 offences - 1 year. Fine Rs 5000/-

Yes, COPS need this rules as they will get money and leave these traffic offencers.

Who will BELL THE CAT? SO DONT WASTE YOU TIME, THIS TRAFFIC CONTROL WILL NEVER HAPPEN IN INDIA!

    hii
IM RAHUL,BORN N BROUGHT UP IN PUNE BUT AT KOLKATA FOR MY WORK.HERE TRAFFIC AND VEHICLES ARE MUCH MORE COMPARED TO PUNE..BUT STILL EVERYONE MAINTAINS TRAFFIC RULES.
ON THE BIKE,ONLY TWO PERSON TRAVEL UNLIKE IN PUNE.BOTH WILL WEAR HELMET WHICH IS COMPULSORY.NO ONE WILL CROSS A LINE BEFORE ZEBRA CROSSING AT SIGNAL WHEN ITS RED.
WE,PUNEKAR NEED TO TAKE UP WITH OUR OWN MIND THAT RULES ARE FOR US ONLY.AND WE SHOULD START TO FOLLOW THEM WITH TAKING INITIATIVE.

Agree with post STRICT RULES. The kids and their parents may feel good about themselves but they are on the wrong track. KIDS SHOULD BE IN SCHOOL STUDYING! Police officers should be responsible for disciplining the traffic. As it turns out they are responsible for nothing other than collecting bribes.
The commissioner claims that there are more intersections than police officers and therefore we can not effectively control traffice. Are you crazy man? Go to America, show me one police officer in one intersection telling people to stop on red light. If a drivers are so stupid that they need to a police officer to tell them to stop on a red light, they should not be driving at all. We need police officers on motorcycles disciplining traffic and when fines are tripled.

And then there are these retarded journalists in Sakal that Punekars don't follow traffic rules. Let me tell them, Punekars are not violators or traffc laws, but when violators get away with it every day, the law-abiders find little incentive to follow the law.

Remember Punekars don't rob. Robbers do. Punekars are not murderers, only some murderers happen to be from Pune. Punekars don't steal, only some thieves have chosen to live in Pune. Journalists are not stupid, only some of them are.

Do they also understand they are putting these children at risk by making them stand in the middle of a road with heavy traffic...where the hell are the police in this town? And where the hell is the home minister? Busy watching the cheer leaders?

Is college of engineering playground a commercial site for Sakal newspaper to run their exhibitions by misusing their influence in the government. I know this is not the topic of discussion but they are never going to raise that question themselves, are they? Shouldn't a playground be exclusively used for playing and not for commercial purposes like exhibitions when open spaces are increasingly scarce in the city as two prominent politicians in the district are stealing all the land for their selfish gains?

anonymous of May 17, 2008 8:52 AM, I completely agree with your views. This is absolutely correct and very true.
I think we need a seperate thread for this discussion, but as we all know this forum is owned and run by sakal parivaar, so don't keep any hopes.

Begining of this year, in front of bajaj allianz office, gunjan theater crossing. I asked traffic police on duty that how do you think pedetrians can crross the street with vehicals including "PMT" buses on the zebra crossing.

He and his assistant were just standing in one corner, and he said this is too much to manage.

Traffic police are either not willing to do the job or they are not well trained to do the job.

There are many cities in India and world were traffic is denser than in Pune, but people do not run traffic lights and break traffic rules.

I think all the credit goes to irresponsible or unskilled traffic police department.
