This is a welcome move. The rapid implementation is a key to its success. The Evils or Obstacles I foresee are, delays due to land acuisitions, lack of government and private funds in time, red-tapism at all levels, pseudo-socilism of certain political parties, etc. The need of the hour is we must have a proper mass transit system that does not depend on Roads alone. Be it sky-bus or underground metro, (I even suggest Mono-Rails for Pune) the clear lack of such planning has made Pune's commuters suffer a lot.

Metro Rail will definitely help Pune but the project should not be like BRT. This is my personal request to Saheb. It should not take longer than estimated and we should involve common Punekar in the planning of the project.

It will give options to people with new, fast mode of trasport.

Definately, Its going to help PUNE, it will give one new option which is fast and pollution free.

Going from one place to another in PUNE is Pain today.

Metro and big roads can solve the Incresing traffic problems.

DEFINITELY it is going to help the Pune & Punekar. Some people saying about incresaing the no./frequency of PMPL busses, but metro train will help to reduce traffic & pollution.
    Now other side,
    1. Currently Pune is facing the shortage of electricity, how governement is providing the permanent electicity for the metro trains? Is the option available?
    2. As the train would be underground, government is able to provide the security like CCTV, Armed force security?

It is definitely not going to work out like many of the unfinished projects or the projects going on at snail's pace. All people want to use personal vehicles to save on time, hence, who is actually going to use the metro rail remains to be seen. The bus service for women continued only for a few days and then it was scrapped. Similarly, will people actually make full use of the metro rail. Nothing seems to be working in Pune as citizens are not taken into consideration while making any road development and public transport implementation plans.

  28. Anonymous said...

it is definately going to help as it will improve the mass commutation, reduce pollution. As we need to think about our future generation to give them clean and green environment, so we nned to plan right now without any political interference this project should go ahead.

  29. Anonymous said...

It is said in nes article that metro will be out of corporation borders. In that case use of the same is VERY limited and will not justify the expenditures.

Instead, as some friends have already suggested, this should be implemented as undersground transport system for reaching core CITY areas or key locations.

  30. Anonymous said...

It will be better to improve the existing public transport facilities on prioroity. That will reduce the no. of private vehicles on the road considerably. Then think of ring road and metros...

Metro rail if constructed on time will definately help pune's traffic. However big question is will it be.. because as the hoistory goes projects like this dont move ahead from paper work or if they move, the PMC takes so much time to construct them hence it becomes useless. Take an example of University fly over. PMC took around 4 years to complete it and Punekars know how much they had to suffer during this period. So if they are planning Metro Rail it Must be completed on VERY URGENT basis

Offcourse this is a good idea for improving transport in pune.
    1. Before investing in something the government should think is the system going to work.
    2. I have been staying in London for the past 1 year. Here they use oyster cards which acts like a valid ticket where you touch to a oyster machine and then only you can enter the tube( train) or bus. You can top up the card for 1 week or monthly or yearly. It is just like how you top up your mobile.
    3. Such systems should be offered in pune and strict fines to those travelling without invalid tickets.

  37. Anonymous said...

The metro should be underground and ticket facilities should be made available to the people easily. But if pune muncipal corporation takes this project seriously and most important completing it on time than rather creating incovenience to public.

  38. Anonymous said...

metro should be made accessible from the nook and corner of the city. CCTV to be implemented in metro as well as buses, bus stops, stations and strict action to be taken towards benefit thieves who try to board buses or trains without tickets.

We should follow the other cities like London,Paris where they give lot of thought on public transport
    Imeediate action should be done
    1>Metro
2>Improve bsu service. At least increase the fleet by 3 times.
Once we improve on above things we should
    1>Encourage people using bycycles a

2>Discourage people to use Cars and two wheelers by putting taxes (like congestion charge in London)
and make them use public transport

No doubt Metro railway in principle is great.. But PMC is good at screwing up most initiatives they have taken, whether its roads, fly over, BRT or Public transport. So given the capability of corrupt politicians and corporators to make cartel, mint money and screw the ppl of Pune, I seriously doubt the success of this project. Its not money, its not will power or the technology that we are short of but nothing seem to work when it comes to our politicians.

I just travelled 3km today, 26th Aug 2008. From Vallabh Nagar to Pimpri. Can you guess the travel time for it. It was 35 minutes while waiting for a bus and covering the distance each side by PMPML. Why PMPML b'cos the RTO today had a strict drive on 6 seaters and hence they are off the road. 3 Seater charging today Rs 10 for the same distance PMPML fare is Rs 5 and for 6 seater also.
This is just for information purpose that though the metro will touch Pimpri, how do people go to the metro station. Each and every area of Pune should have metered 3 seats and 6 and 3 seats with same face as PMPML. Then only the metro will be able to reduce the load on the roads. If I have to pay Rs 20 on each side to get to the metro station and Rs 40 for Agri College and back, I would better opt for a 2 wheeler. Metro success will be dependent on the feeder system itself. The feeder system if it fails on the date of commencement of the metro will show it in a month or two. PMPML may declare there income in these days when 6 seaters are off the road, but fill will never increase the frequency on the route and add new routes.

  48. Anonymous said...

Yes it is extremely important that Pune has a better Public transport. Just PMPL is not enough. Looking at the pace by which Pune is growing we need a very good metro plan implemented in next 2-3 year which is extremely difficult but its necessary. Better than metro would be the sky buses like in Sydney. We can use the existing roads and build a sky bus route over them.

It should be simply suitable for anyone residing within the redious of about 50 to 70 kms of Pune-Pimpri-Chinchwad area.
Most important point which planners should not overlook that the quality of work should be the best and needs to be completed within timebound period. To ensure this, planners should call for Globle Tenders.
Metro Railway should be distinctly different than Local Rail Service and Bus Service.

Railways usually have better control over environmental disturbance. This will definitely reduce load on traffic in general with operating economy and major convinience.

Its a great news but importantly like capt sub has mentioned care has to be taken over couple of issues. First is city coverage since unlike Mumbai, Pune is not only larger in area but also spreadout/ eventually will in all directions. And secondly technical care. Well for quick recovery of investments and REDUCTION of crowd from roads the first part of road choice is important. Since project is not entirely UNDERGROUND, from long term perspectives nearby cities could be connected like Satara, Baramati and others.
After this project another major project still remains which is INTERNATIONAL Airport

I been reading the news of bilding metro network for Pune for the past 30 years. Every time the news mentions that the legal hurdles are clear and the work will commense soon. Time has proved that all these news were far from the truth. I live in Japan for the past 15 years. Here when a news of creation of a new metro line is given it always mentions the exact day and time when the first train will actually run. In contrast, in India a news is given when a green signal by politicians is given "on paper". Subsequently people learn that there is no money allocated for the project, land has not been acquired etc. I wish that mass media should investigate the details before boradcasting it. To me this sounds like "landgaa aalaa re alaa" story.

i am a Punekar, currently staying in Delhi. i am using the delhi metro everyday. a metro is very urgently needed in Pune. However, the most imp consideration is will the authorities be able to manage the construction work properly.
it is not so easy even on the wide roads of Delhi and i don't need say anything on the condition of the roads and the speed with which the civic works go on in Pune.
if the way the university gate fly-overs were built is any indication, Metro is something impossible. we must have someone like Mr. E. Sreedharan to build a Pune Metro.

    Big Suspense?

Metro railway decision took very late. They should add metro Swarget to Katraj because its most busy road, ruler member only doing development in their area like that Sinhagad road.

When traffic problem going overhead then ruler people taking actions on making cycle track, BRT, now Metro. current PLAN IS VERY BAD, they are doing all things on same area (space), if you check satara road cycle track and BRT is completely failed because of not proper plan. All road should be big and try to do Straight BRT road , also cycle track should Straight, now its looking very funny and it will not help in future.

Where is world class management or plan?

Before do any plan, think about after 20 years, it will help? This is vesting of money. And how will they make metro? its big suspense. and I don’t want to talk on corruption.

Pune Metro is must for development of pune. Instead of wasting money on BRT funds and priority should be diverted to metro rail.
Metro and ring road should be started and completed with highest priority. Before it is too late.
I use car to commute to office from hadapsar to Aundh, Its really hectic waste fuel, and increase in pollution. I would always prefer to use public transport. The condition of public transport today is very very bad. I have been seeing it for last 10 year, it is same. BRT is definatly not a solution.

Metro is ring is must and proven solution to improve traffic condition in fast growing Pune.
    - All political parties and NGO's should come forward to support this and make it reality.
    - They should help to resolve all the issues coming in its and not contribute to create issues for personal interest.
    - PMC/PCMC authority, laws should be use in resolve all the problem to make metro and ring road and reality. Everyone and every problem coming it way of development should be resolve using laws, without personal and polotical favour/interest.

Metro route to Hadapsar is missing.
All the three route does show any plans to be extended towards Hadapsar.
    - Pimpri route could be extended till Nigde or Talegoan.
    - Swargate route could be extended till Katraj.
    - Kalyani-nagar route could be extended till Kharadi/Wagholi/Nagar Road.
    - no Route is available for Solapur road. Fortunately PMC Mayor is from Hadapsar, but looks thats she don't want hadapsar/solapur road to develop.

To solve problems of public transport in Pune, only one solution for all problem will be toooooo optimistic.

    I have following questions-

Metro will solve the problems- to what extent did it solve for Delhi?

The routes decided- how many people are likely to commute and why?

How will people reach the metro stations? what if they use another mode of transport- will there be areas to park their vehicles?

The ring road- will it have facility to deploy metro on it any time?

Will it have bus stations where buses and people will stand not on road?

    These my two cents-

    1. Pune will need combination of all sorts of public transport systems
    2. Distribute the traffic zone-wise. For example, Pune will have to isolate the Govt offices, and other social services in various zones and make sure that people from one zone need not have to travel to another zone for govt related work
    3. The main hubs of the transport systems like Metro must have huge parking areas for cars, bikes.
    4. To avoid pollution, Pune will need buses operating on CNG- has anyone of you visited Delhi recently?
    5. In half the price of Metro, Pune can buy 5000 buses, which can solve many problems of transportation immediately. Have you seem people waiting for buses on all bus stops? why do they wait?

    6. I never had to use personal transportation like Taxi anywhere in USA, Europe because I they have beautiful and efficient bus, metro, service.

    7. The airport at Rajgurunagar- will it have metro station?

    Finally,
Has anyone studied metro, public transport system of Munich?

Have you asked people using bikes, cars, to know why are they using personal transport?

Are politicians really thinking @ development or another project where they can earn money?

Delhi was diffrent case as it is capital of India. Somehow Metro was done. I don't think in corrupted Maharashtra this project will be done. This Idea is really good but as usual on paper. I may be talking negative but this is from past experience. Either this is new money making scheme or smart political move. Politicians never care for people.

metros project will help pune regain its beauty as it will help save petrol and reduce pollution.
it will also help solve pune's traffic chaos. but the most imp part is the time this project will take we all know how troublesome it will be to commute on the roads were the project will be done.

  81. Anonymous said...

I might be a pessimistic but I seriously doubt if the Metro or the ring road is actually going to help the traffic conditions in Pune.
The traffic needs to have some discipline and respect for others on the road. This is a social sense and nothing else. Additionally, the municipal authorities also need to make sure the roads and other amenities are in good condition.

Is there any comprehensive study done for the real needs of people?
Has someone really thought of the logistics of building a network such as a metro in a over-crowded city like Pune?
It would be beneficial to get help form people who have a good understanding of similar systems in places like London, Munich, Paris, etc.

On a positive side I would say, if there is a "real" will then there are many ways to get this project to succeed.

In my opinion this is just another political move and has no other meaning.

I hope that this project of Metro rail will act as an threatening alarm to PMPL buses and to survive the competition they will take some drastic steps to improve the service.

Pune Metro Railway is very beneficial In addition to all these benefits
    1) It will help to reduce traffic on the roads which in turn will help in reducing the cost on road maintainance
    2) Usage of less Petrol,Desiel and LPG.
    3) Less trafic on roads will also help in less accidents.
    4) It will create jobs.
The only request is rapid implementation with the help of modern technology. Thanks to the government. These kinds of work will help government and people.

Metro rail is real boost to pune's future development.
Considering the narrow roads in the interior parts of pune and no space to expand, Metro is the best solution.
Its also vital to consider that project is planned according to expansion in next 100 years.
Public transport like metro rail is good alternative to slove traffic problems.
I hope the project starts as soon as possible and is completed within the time limit.
And Thank you to those people who have taken up this responsibility.

After reading some of the comments,it becomes obvious that most, who are naive and gullible are expecting a miracle to remove/ease traffic congestion, reduce air pollution, make it very easy to commute from any point in the city & restore Pune's old charm!

While the metro will definitely be a partial relief to the sector, where it will be operating,
it will NOT at all solve the main problems enumerated above for the simple reason that just existence of the underground metro rail in a miniscule corridor under the vast areas of the city will still not make it so simple/easy to commute to & from the metro stations due to the chaos & traffic jams above that we are so familiar with.

Knowing our city planners/administrators,there will not be even 10% of necessary parking spaces around the stations & the derelict PMPML buses will continue their inefficient service.

Its GOOD to hear that now Pune will also have Metro Ralis. This was much much much needed by the city. Pune today is at the PEAK POINT of DEVELOPMENT, its the nations largest Educational HUB, so providing such facility is a MUST. For companies like Infosys, Persistant, Cybercity, ect, Pune is their HOME CITY as it was HERE in Pune that these companies were started, so Pune, also being an IT CITY needs such good infrastucture facilities like Metros. According to me UNDERGROUND Metro will be much better than Elevated Metro, because underground Metro will save space which is most needed because in Pune I dont think there's much space to build an elevated metro, but possible even tough. I feel not only selected parts but the WHOLE of the CITY should be connected by Metro so that this will solve the PUNE-TRAFFIC-PROBLEM which has now been a ISSUE of NATIONAL level discussion!! In Pune there are maximum number of two wheelers registered and thus we have a terrific TRAFFIC problem, so to reduce this the whole city should be under metro connectivity. Now i am just awaiting my first ride in METRO in PUNE. I hope this project gets passed FAST and its construction completes sucessfully and that too very soon. CHEERS PUNE!

    Joke of the year 2008:

निओ यांच्या "Joke of the year 2008" या उद्गगाराशी मी सहमत आहे!!!

Metro project in Pune will definitely help for Pune. But it should be on elevated lines, which takes less space. TRANSPORT is the top priority part of basic infrastrcuture of any metro. But this should be done in very planned manner and completed in stipulated time frame. Route should be designed considering people requirement & not looking political benefits. This project should not go by BRT way, which is worst public project I ever seen and with no benefit. Another on going project is Cycle track. This is really going to increase traffic problems.
Also in addition to Metro project, elevated City highways will be benefited to reduce traffic on existing roads. Instead builiding small flyovers, elevated long distance road is better solution. For these elevated roads there will be exit & entry point at every 3-4 kms as per convenience.

I think again Capt Sub has important point to make that as much possible all or majority of metro MUST be underground. The city roads are pretty narrow and this metro will unnecesarily consume more space. Look at what that BRTs have done. It was hurriedly brought and somehow it appears like nothing more than waste of money. That project should be scrapped and replaced with Long term beneficial UNDERGROUND Metro.
Also if neighbouring towns are well connected by such metro, then it will help development to be SPREADOUT and NOT saturate the city.

And like somebody has mentioned to ease the space off the roads consumed for parking, building dedicated for parking should be built at numerous places in the city.

This Metro system is going to have three route .Which is why I am bit disappointed.
Only three routes wont solve the problem of traffic.
    goverment can think like this,
1.Make Deccan as the centre of the metro.
2.Make two circle routes .One inner circle and other outer circle .Outer circle route will be parallel to the ring road.
3.Now there should be in total 8 routes coming into the city converging at the center station that is deccan.
4.Startting point of each should be from the ring road route .
    like 1.Katraj.2.Sinhagad. 3 Chandani chowk.(1.Kotharud 2. Bavdhan) 4 Balewadi thru ahund.
5 Hingewadi or wakad 6 dehu road
    7 Hadapsar 8 Viman Nagar(Nagar road ).

    5. Inner circle should connect the importmant parts of the interior of the city.

This is a costly project but if u consider for next 100 years it will be worth to invest considering the future development of the city.

Even the rich people will think twice before using the car .They can reach faster by metro.

In this project they should also think how r they planning the future development of the city and according to it make plans for future extensions.

Many people will think that there are two many routes .
But just consider this we have a population of more than 40 lakh .
That is huge number and three routes are not enough.

It will be great to have metro in Pune.. Considering the fact that Pune is developing as a IT hub, more and more people going to come in near future. Since, its not easy to manipulate existing roads in pune, its better to have ring road to save time and reduce the pollution.

From my experience in transit world in Europe and USA, there are other policy issues that Pune need to consider:
    1. All transportation alternatives including Roads, Highways, Toll roads, Metro, BRT, Buses on bus lanes, regular buses, van pools, car share, bicycles and not to forget pedestrian
    2. Build and Maintain good sidewalks / Foothpath as every Metro use is first pedestrian
    3. Discourage use of single occupancy vehicle by appropriate parking management, consider increasing age for vehicle license and add hefty fee for auto ownership
    4. Adding bicycle route / lanes across the city
    5. Pune needs to look at London and Milan for congestion pricing in inner city
    6. Consider other congestion mitigation initiatives that work in other parts of the world
    7. Set baseline for current pollution level and set target for 2050 or os
    8. Most important is to involve citizens at every steps of planning this project

If proper planning and environmental impacts are not evaluated at the beginning of the project, there are heavy cost implications later.

All said, good initiative and good luck.

Metro is an eye-wash , day-dream shown by Authorities to poor Pune citizens. Autjorities know the project will not be impletmented in next 10years. And the Punekar public will suffer a lot. By the time Metro is inaugurated, the vehicle population in Pune will be more than human population in Pune. ( See the report in Pune TOI dated 01-Sep-08). As per this report 600 vehicles per day are added to the Pune roads. Only solution to control the number of new vehicles in Pune is to imporve PMPML with 3000 buses on road. This will need maximum Rs.600 crores. ( i.e. only 10% of the proposed metro cost). The new PMPML buses will also generate employment for at least twenty thousand Punekar. As soon as 3000 buses start runnning on Pune roads, 6 lakh pvt vehicles , will not come on the roads. This will make the Pune roads free of vehicles and the Pollution of Pune will come down to 10% of the current level.

Without appearing prejudiced, the much needed solution for Pune[and most other stinking, polluted, overcrowded cities gasping for breath] due to the blunders & corrupt nature of our rulers is to throw atomic bombs on them to raze them to the ground with all these politicians too & rebuild from scratch.
But that too will be a failure as we have no CONCEPT OF TOWN PLANNING,FAMILY PLANNING & are used to living in hellholes & the extreme greed of the remaining or next generation of politicians/administrators will probably be worse than their predecessors!
