for the "viewer's"roles in accidents, the stupid govt. machinery is more responsible.the one who involves in the help, his time, honesty, and mental agony is taken in to task by police, relatives of deceased, and public.can you site a single incident when it is informed to police by a public, they have rushed to the spot within ten minuets and rescued the deceased and then bothered about "panchanama"later?.in other developed countries the police van/ambulance reaches to the spot on any road of that country within ten minuets along with EMERGENCY DOCTOR SQUAD AND equipments.if they fail, they are responsible. our police declares lot many assurances which are only dilogues.they are more interested in "safe"paper work at the cost of helper.

This is one of things that reminds me hostile roads in India. The value of life in general is too less compared to most of the developed countries in the world. It really does not matter what you are or how much you earn, you can die like an ant or insect in a road accident. This apathy is lethal and it needs to be changed. Every Indian is responsible for this and can NOT blame just goverment for not helping dying person with sip of water. Its them who decide not to wear helmets and drive like a maniacs. The comparison of driving habits in western world vs. those in India is like comparing wealth of Mukesh Ambani with street begger. When we will come forward to help dying person with ANY help, then only I will say 'India is Shining' Otherwise I will say India is still a THIRD WORLD country.

I disagree with the previous comment "helper sufferor said... "
For these things sometimes we are also responcible since we take only viewing stand...Imagine the same situation came on us or some of our family member or fried and other people are only wathcing it what we are going to feel at that time. Life of some one is more important than police documents/Money and all other things. we should start form ourselves we should not only view but we should help when we see any accident bcoz who knows same thing may happen with us also. I know if we help we may suffer form police and others but in the end you have saved one precious life...which is more important than the other things.......so start changing our view first and then blame the police and government

There needs to be a big campaign of public awareness on TV and in newspapers to urge people to save lives. The campaign also should urge police and govt. not to put the helping hands in hand-cuffs of red tape and police altrocities. Emlpoyers should grant time-off for employees reaching late to the office under such scenarios. Everyone should think 'What if it was me who got in the crash'.
Road signs on highway should post number to call and urge people to help victims when they see them.
Laws need to be changed to make this easier on the helping hands.
Some non profit organizations should take initiative for the public awareness and post statistics of lost lives before and six months after the initiative.

Well, today you have written that people are afraid of polics harrassment. I am not in agreement. I have helped people whenver seen an accident on road even carrying the victim in my car. I havent faced any problem from police whatsoever.

You have o give required infomration. That's all. Those who give excuse of police harrassment are hypocrites and there are many in our society.

Even yesterday night at 7.30 PM (gth Dec 2007) I saw an accident on Dehuroad Katraj Bypass. The car which had hit was leaving the victim. I stopped and carried the enjured couple in my car to a hosptal in Kothrud. The old lady was serious. She got the treatment and her life is saved. I left after relatives (her 3 sons arrived. Her son told me today morning that she is better now. He aslo told ploce ahd come to hospital. There is no interaction between me and Polce. WHere is the question of harrassment???

Few years back an old man hit his two wheeler to a pole on the road. He was having serious head enjury. I took him to Mangeshkar hospital nearby. His life was saved.

I dont think there is polcie harrassment. They too apprecaite your proactiveness. And the relatives of the victim? I dont have words to describe their emotions.

Congratulations Nitin. Keep up the good work. It is good to know that the police do not harass anymore. Their attitude is changed. 27 yers ago, when we found a hit and run victim unconcious on the road, stopped the car and rushed him to nearest hospital and reported to police, the police threatoned to put us in lock up accusing that it was our car which did the hit. When the doctor said that this victim must have been hit several hours ago and the victim woke up and described that it was a truck, not a car hit him, the police had to clear us. Then also they were demanding a bribe of 500 rupees.
Even though the police and government had this attitude, we always used to help without thinking of consequences and a saved life goes very far in your life to have a concious and feeling that you did a right thing.
