Emotions of a software engineer...

Emotions of a software engineer...

It was raining heavily outside. Dark clouds gathered in the sky and nature was in its ominous best. I took a break from my work and went to the pantry to grab a cup of coffee. I had a sip and went near the window to see the rain pouring down heavily outside the glass structure. I was inside our huge office building, unruffled by even the fierceness of the nature.

Through the heavy transparent glass, I could see a small girl trying to hold on to her umbrella which the wind was snatching away from her. I felt sorry for the girl, and was happy that I was not in a similar pathetic situation. Yes. I take pride for the fact that I am a software engineer.

I have everything which a common man would envy; money, status, respect, you name it I have it. I always wanted to be software professional and here I am, working for one of the best firms in the world. But then, am I really happy? Now, I could see an imprint of my palm on the other glass window, through which I reminisced my past, basked in the warmth of the sun shine.

My childhood was so much of fun. I vividly remember those rainy days, when I hugged my mother tightly during sleeping listening to all the stories told by her. Now, I have a big house here, but then it is just a house, not a home. My parents are pretty far away from me now. I have a cell phone to talk to them everyday, but then I really miss those dinners which I had with my family everyday. I could easily afford to taste all the different cuisines these days, but the best of food there, lack the love and affection which is present in the food prepared by my mother.

I threw a lavish party for my colleagues for my birthday, but then they would never replace the birthdays when my friends secretly brought a cake and at the end, half of the cake would have ended up on my face. The couple of hundred bucks that u save for a long period just to give a treat to your friends in the road side chat shop can never give the pleasure even after spending a few thousand bucks these days.

The scene of me crying and refusing to have dinner on the day when I fought with my best friend came to my mind. Today, she has gone far away from me, taking away my love and with it my life, but I am sitting and coding here with a false smile on my face. Everyday I meet new people, but then I long ceased to make a new friend.

It's true that I have a lot of things now. I have a nice bed, but no time to sleep. Lots of money, but no friends to spend it with. The latest designer clothes, but a worn out body . Awards for technical excellence, but no reward for the crave for peaceful ambience. A confident demeanor, but a reluctant and apathetic mind. Full of rain, but no sunshine even in the farthest distance.
Now, I could see the small girl on the road enjoying in the rain with her umbrella firmly in her grip. She might not have all the comforts which I have, but then she has the innocence and fun which I lost a long time back.

I have decided to come out of this false fantasy, even if it is at the expense of losing the tap of the software engineer. I am going to again enjoy my life. I am going to go out in the rain and play with the small kid now. I removed my tie, and went near my computer to shut it down. Just then, I saw a new mail alert in my mail box. I slowly opened Lotus Notes and I found a message from my manager with an attachment saying that there was a critical defect in the code and I have to fix it soon. I convinced myself that I am not going to get bogged down again by these pressures and stick to my decision. I ignored the mail and went to the rest room. After a couple of minutes, the software engineer in me came out, his shirt tucked in with the perfect tie knot, sat before the computer, and started typing,

Sir,
I am looking into the defect and will send the patch files before EOD.
Regards,
Software Engineer.

Emotions of a Software Engineer...Very Funny

I wonder what these IT engineers think of themselves. They have 2 days weekly holidays, onsite oppurtunities, high paid jobs, outbound team building, company trips, parties, different days, 24hr internet (chat and browsing)....

After these amenities if they think they are sacrifising lot of are working harder than other people in different industries...they are making fool of themselves...NO PAIN NO GAIN mate...if you dont like your job why dont leave and ENJOY your life..

It is true that life in a Software company is really tough but it is not impossible as well. I'm working with one of the best software company in world with high workload. I'm far away from my hometown and family. But still I'm enjoying my life.

It is not that I'm partying hard and spending time n money in pubs etc. Whenever I go to home after office hours I use to stay at home. Talk to my family members, share my whole day experience with them. Listen to their activities.

This is the way I relax myself from tension. It is also helpful in many ways. It is not that life is hard, the imp thing is how you look at your life.

Do 'Sosal'work, don't take the burden of work. Take it easy and enjoy every moment in your life.

I think "Emotions of a software engineer..." represents emotions of few weak people in the IT field who are really not worth in working such an important field. You can do all that enjoyment which he is dreaming of. It just needs time and mind management. I am in the research field and we are also equally busy and under pressure, but learn to fase it and if you are not able to do it, just leave it. Dont just stick there just becasue you get lots of money.

Fully agree with Sushant...

I am myself in the IT field and it looks like some aren't just satisfied with the already overrated lifestyle, they also want a shoulder to cry on. Well i for one, have nothing to offer... I think you are extremely selfish and have a inflated ego...

It shows the immaturity of the software community as a whole. Read some good books, look at other people in all strata of the society and then reevaluate again.
In short, open your eyes..

If you still think you are at a disadvantage then no one can help you. You just have to suffer ;-)
Oh poor you...

IT industry is the best industry to work in (at least for me), no doubt about it.

You get –
up-to-date Information and Technology (as name suggests),
good money and lot of opportunities with global environment,

Now at every step of life there were two important things which decide my happiness one is my abilities and another is my expectations.

And the answer is simple, if I am able I will meet my expectations and I will be happy else I need to take some effort which is nothing but improving myself and working harder which might be little painful (this is what people cry foul about I guess).

In a nutshell either improve your abilities or lower your expectations in terms of achievements, money etc etc...

Whatever happens in the life is either because of our own decision or because of our luck (whatever you say) :-)
But if we want to do it then we can do it, no doubt about it!

I am a Mechanical Engineer turned Software engineer.I have been through all the good/bad times of both the professions.
Who says there is only a huge pressure in software industry alone? It is not true.Every profession has the professional hazzards and kick-backs.
We only pamper just the software profession as there is lot of money involved in it and people think they do very hi-fi jobs over here.

I as a Mechanical engineer have worked for many years in Shift not just one but TWO , THREE, and in case of emergency of plant shutdown even spent a week with as little as 1 or 2 hours sleep and that for many years. Are not people working in 24x7 chemical plants or on oil rigs or on marine or as IAS IPS OFFICERS not under lot of tension , heavy workload ? Do they not work on targets?

What now a days is going on is just pampering just one profession .The Software Engineers need to come out of the mentality that they are doing something which is VERY GREAT and SHOULD become more MENTALY strong.I think due to the money we bring home is the reason we are being given a special status by our mother/father/relatives/friends. We think that we are the only creatures in this world who alone have lot of workload and targets. I have been to both sides and there is nothing that great about it.The kind of jobs transferred to India are grade-2 or grade-3 jobs.We need to understand this by heart,we are not different than our counterparts working in other professions. If we are not able to sustain such pressure probably we are incompetent.

So I REQUEST ALL TO PLEASE STOP SPREADING THE NEGATIVITY TO OTHERS .WHEN WE R GOING TO BE HAPPY, WHEN MUCH MORE SUICIDES TAKEN PLACE???????? PLEASE GIVE THEM HOPE INSTEAD !!!!!

IN MARATHI IT IS SAID THAT "नेहमी दुसर्या ची नोकरी आणि बायको चांगली वाटत असते "
SO PLEASE STOP NEGATIVITY AND BE POSITIVE.

These emotions are funny......

In which profession u will get a chance to go out when it is raining , leaving your work ?

People working in GULF countries sometimes do not see their families for 2-3 years.

You get all the facilities (apart from huge packages which take care of your other family problems , that other professional have to face on themselves ) plus team building efforts like (very few mentioned)
1.Inhouse birthday celebrations in offices (on which job it is allowed ?)
2.Trips to nearby places on companies expences
3.Get-to-gathers and celebrations on completion of projects
4.Annual day celebrations
5.Training and workshops on company cost to improve your skills
6.Non-formal working environment

I think those who are unable to take the pressures should do the jobs they like.(You will find similar even worse work-culture, conditions in other professions )

I completely agree with Satyendra.
Engineers in IT feel that their job is an extension to college (but paid handsomely). Rose day, valentines day, birthday, annual day,This day and that day celebrations...Just to retain the employee by giving him/her collge like (fun) informal atmosphere.AND DO THESE HIGH-SKILL PROFESSIONAL THINK OF THE ORGANIZATION THEY WORK FOR ? NO !!! THEY TAKE THE LIBERTY OF JOB-HOPPING EVEN FOR 1-2 MONTHS. WHERE IS THE RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR THEN ??????

The only period of tension is when the deadline appears close and the required skill set is not with you.

" म्हणजे जेवायला आधी , जोपायाला मधी आणि कामाला कधी मधी "

Celebrating b'day with close friend is bullshit. Just try to remember how many close friends were changed from your 1st standard to the Engineering degree. So I think the IT engineers need to grow up.

Secondly it is very unfortunate of when the person could not visit on death of his close one. Usually IT companies go out of the way to make arrangements for such mis-happs. But if you are thousands of kilometres away you hardly have such liberty.

I think the Software Engineers need to GROW UP

35. Anonymous said...

Supriya and Satyandra are very correct. I was in a multinational company as Shift incharge(Manufacturing not in IT/Software).We were 3 shift incharges working in 3 shifts.

I would like to share a kissa of my marriage. For my marriage I got just 5 days leave due to an urgent export order completion. We could not postpone the wedding as the hall and other arrangements were done 10months ago . so I left my workplace in sunday evening , monday was my wedding, however I was called by my WorksManager on wednsday explaining the situation that one of the other shift incharge got an accident , and asked if I am able to report on thursday (that too in the night shift!). Your commitment to the organization is important , so I joined the duty within 3rd day from my marriage leaving behind my honeymoon and worked for 12-12 hrs with my 3rd collegue So such thing happen in other industries not just in software ...... the question is how commited you are .........

1) why writer feels that he/she is different from a 'common man'.... whats is that 'uncommon' factor he/she thinks he/she has... its just a field which one has selected on its own. no body has forced to get into this field.

2) You will hardly find anyone in this world saying 'you name it and I have it'. after all its a human nature where person keeps on saying i need more..... :)

3) staying away from parents is individual choice. people want to go onsite, they want earn money... no one forces them to go to onsite ... at least long term. In my career I have seen many people desperate to go to onsite long term. They just refuse short term assignments......

4) maintaining friend circle depends on an individual. just being an IT professional is not an excuse. i have seen all my IT frinds in a periodic get together apart from all their routines. Similarly I have seen non IT friends not even talking to each other over phone for years.

5) one does not lose innocence and fun just because he or she belongs to a specific industry. Every individual professional grows mature over a period of time but that does not mean they no more have fun in their lives....

bottomline - its upto an individual to decide what type of life he wants to live.... if you want to be part of a demanding industry you need to mould yourself to take all the pressures, maintain work-life balance by yourself. If one thinks that he/she is sacrifycing precious moments of his/her life for the industry it is not so because he/she is getting returns in one or the other forms. The moral is simple. Money cannot buy everything. The enjoyment of life lies in simple living. Live simple and enjoy life!

Things said in the blog apply not only to IT but to other industries also. IT is taken here because it is glamorous and nothing else.

This is nothing to do with the IT profession !
All the professions have tensions , deadlines for work .Its normal way of working in these cut-throat competition days .
As you start climbing the management ladder you must learn to handle work tensions and stress .I agree that staying away from the home country , family is difficult especailly when you are frustrated !Then one should develop few good friends to whom can talk and try to relieve tensions . Everyone must remember -Suicide cannot be the solution to solve the problems but its the start of the problems for your loved ones .

५]"Survival of the FITTEST" हा सिद्धांत आजहि लागू पडतो!

I feel pity abt software people. They are absolutely crap. Why you choose a lifestyle that you hate, and hope to gain sympathy from others? How many IT peoples are aware of the hard work and panic of a labour? He can write about many things/troubles which can be brutel also. But unfortunately he can not use blog and things remain in dark. So dear softies, just come out of your own shell and look at world around you. Hope it will help.

What i think is everybody is right on his/her place. but one can also get connected with his nostalgic days in many ways like to keeping your hobbies on, you can enjoy your life as you wish to.i know work is there for everybody and that have to do daily but if you can take plunge and indulge in any activity i am sure it gives you immense happyness.in every work there is expectation, boundries, responsibilty this is a part of every task what i am saying is, if you can take out a time for you and create a space in which dont allow anybody to enter then you can actully enjoy yourl life. but this is not a every day task you have to take out a time where you can actully reconnect with you. i am having a question for everybody that, is every person knows himself ? i think most of the people says 'NO'
then better undrstand you first then things will automaticaly sorted out.... try it.

Amusing! The SWE (software engineer)is showing off his affluence (big house, nice car, lots of money etc) at one end and poverty of will power at the other! I wonder what keeps him where he is if he misses his family (does he mean his parents? If so why aren't they with him?), his friends (he does not say how he keeps in touch with them.) There is something known as 'Freewill', which our SWE can exercise and return to SWADES! I agree with him on one point: even in this age and times, there is no pleasure which can surpass happiness of watching rain and bathing in those showers in the Ghats. Do it, young man! You have a choice.

It is unfortunately chasing for what you do not have, this is not only case of software engineer, it is case of every person who live in past. I suppose, we should be strong in our mind and should not go in past, all that is not with you is good, is not the case,
I feel it is frame of weak mind.

A real story ...A gossip between a Solider and Software Engineer in Shatabdhi Train .........An interesting and a must read!

Vivek Pradhan was not a happy man. Even the plush comfort of the air-conditioned compartment of the Shatabdhi express could not cool his frayed nerves. He was the Project Manager and still not entitled to air travel. It was not the prestige he sought; he had tried to reason with the admin person, it was the savings in time. As PM, he had so many things to do!!

He opened his case and took out the laptop, determined to put the time to some good use.

"Are you from the software industry sir," the man beside him was staring appreciatively at the laptop. Vivek glanced briefly and mumbled in affirmation, handling the laptop now with exaggerated care and importance as if it were an expensive car.

"You people have brought so much advancement to the country, Sir. Today everything is getting computerized."

"Thanks," smiled Vivek, turning around to give the man a look. He always found it difficult to resist appreciation. The man was young and stockily built like a sportsman. He looked simple and strangely out of place in that little lap of luxury like a small town boy in a prep school. He probably was a railway sportsman making the most of his free traveling pass.

"You people always amaze me," the man continued, "You sit in an office and write something on a computer and it does so many big things outside."

Vivek smiled deprecatingly. Naive ness demanded reasoning not anger. "It is not as simple as that my friend. It is not just a question of writing a few lines. There is a lot of process that goes behind it."

For a moment, he was tempted to explain the entire Software Development Lifecycle but restrained himself to a single statement. "It is complex, very complex."

"It has to be. No wonder you people are so highly paid," came the reply.

This was not turning out as Vivek had thought. A hint of belligerence crept into his so far affable, persuasive tone. "

Everyone just sees the money. No one sees the amount of hard work we have to put in. Indians have such a narrow concept of hard work. Just because we sit in an air-conditioned office, does not mean our brows do not sweat. You exercise the muscle; we exercise the mind and believe me that is no less taxing."

He could see, he had the man where he wanted, and it was time to drive home the point.

"Let me give you an example. Take this train. The entire railway reservation system is computerized. You can book a train ticket between any two stations from any of the hundreds of computerized booking centres across the country.

Thousands of transactions accessing a single database, at a time concurrently; data integrity, locking, data security. Do you understand the complexity in designing and coding such a system?"

The man was awestruck; quite like a child at a planetarium. This was something big and beyond his imagination.

"You design and code such things."

"I used to," Vivek paused for effect, "but now I am the Project Manager."

"Oh!" sighed the man, as if the storm had passed over,

"so your life is easy now."

This was like the last straw for Vivek. He retorted, "Oh come on, does life ever get easy as you go up the ladder. Responsibility only brings more work.

Design and coding! That is the easier part. Now I do not do it, but I am responsible for it and believe me, that is far more stressful. My job is to get the work done in time and with the highest quality.

To tell you about the pressures, there is the customer at one end, always changing his requirements, the user at the other, wanting something else, and your boss, always expecting you to have finished it yesterday."

Vivek paused in his diatribe, his belligerence fading with self-realization. What he had said, was not merely the outburst of a wronged man, it was the truth. And one need not get angry while defending the truth.

"My friend," he concluded triumphantly, "you don't know what it is to be in the Line of Fire".

The man sat back in his chair, his eyes closed as if in realization. When he spoke after sometime, it was with a calm certainty that surprised Vivek.

"I know sir.... I know what it is to be in the Line of Fire......."
He was staring blankly, as if no passenger, no train existed, just a vast expanse of time.

"There were 30 of us when we were ordered to capture Point 4875 in the cover of the night.

The enemy was firing from the top.

There was no knowing where the next bullet was going to come from and for whom.

In the morning when we finally hoisted the tricolour at the top only 4 of us were alive."

"You are a...?"

"I am Subedar Sushant from the 13 J&K Rifles on duty at Peak 4875 in Kargil. They tell me I have completed my term and can opt for a soft assignment.

But, tell me sir, can one give up duty just because it makes life easier.

On the dawn of that capture, one of my colleagues lay injured in the snow, open to enemy fire while we were hiding behind a bunker.

It was my job to go and fetch that soldier to safety. But my captain sahib refused me permission and went ahead himself.

He said that the first pledge he had taken as a Gentleman Cadet was to put the safety and welfare of the nation foremost followed by the safety and welfare of the men he commanded... ....his own personal safety came last, always and every time."

"He was killed as he shielded and brought that injured soldier into the bunker. Every morning thereafter, as we stood guard, I could see him taking all those bullets, which were actually meant for me . I know sir....I know, what it is to be in the Line of Fire."

Vivek looked at him in disbelief not sure of how to respond. Abruptly, he switched off the laptop.

It seemed trivial, even insulting to edit a Word document in the presence of a man for whom valor and duty was a daily part of life; valour and sense of duty which he had so far attributed only to epical heroes.

The train slowed down as it pulled into the station, and Subedar Sushant picked up his bags to alight.

"It was nice meeting you sir."

Vivek fumbled with the handshake.

This hand... had climbed mountains, pressed the trigger, and hoisted the tricolour. Suddenly, as if by impulse, he stood up at attention and his right hand went up in an impromptu salute.

It was the least he felt he could do for the country.

PS: The incident he narrated during the capture of Peak 4875 is a true-life incident during the Kargil war. Capt. Batra sacrificed his life while trying to save one of the men he commanded, as victory was within sight. For this and various other acts of bravery, he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the nation's highest military award.

In my opinion this artical really carves the feelings of most of the Software engineers here...its fine to say these all things....but can u just imagine that we r here just bcoz it was our own wish...we can also enjoy the work by taking it in either way n thinking in more positive way...instead of wasting time in cursing we can utilise it by doing something which makes our mind relax n happy....

Real problemit seems is about miscalculation of future. Problems are everywhere and i think people from all field share what is expressed. Main reason is we have lost our creativity and running after whcich we dont know. It is passion whcih keeps us going and not facilities or comfort. Once u r goddam tired u will fall asleep on stone also but for that one needs free mind. Sometimes it feels our life is like one depicted in Born Free movie. We need nurturing and care to keep us going and strong. Work pressure and threats destroy not only body but creativity. Now a days whole world is run around only one motive that is money. We have lost our innosence. For this we will defenitly pay.

Shoes specially made for losing weight are available today and footwear etc can be quite effective. These shoes have been out for a while and some companies have risen to the top MBT shoes demonstrated that they can provide a quality product to consumers. One mbt shoes review such type of these shoes is the MBT Shoe made by a company called Swiss Masai. In case you mbt shoes cheap did not MBT stands for Masai Barefoot Technology. In this write up we want to take a mbt shoes review closer look at these special shoes.

The development and idea behind the MBT shoe design is quite mbt shoes sale interesting. What the shoe attempts to do is structure the shape of the shoe so mbt shoes cheap that it simulates walking on sand. Specifically, the they want to attempt to make it as if you are walking mbt shoes review along the natural sand environment of the Masai in Kenya. Sports trainers have known for quite a while now mbt walking shoes that working out on dry sand is a great way to get in excellent cardiovascular condition. As you mbt shoes clearance walk on sand it creates an uneven surface on your feet and it forces you to shift your center of gravity to mbt sandals an unnatural position. Your body compensates for this by using several different mbt sandals muscle groups in your feet, calves, thighs, and torso that you would not use wearing typical shoes. This is the ideas MBT behind the MBT weight loss shoes and it does seem to MBT work for some people.

More specifically, MBT makes several positive claims MBT shoes and benefits from wearing their shoes. They will take muscle groups MBT shoes not normally used in walking and make them active. The shoes will give you a better posture, and a more effective discount mbt shoes gait when walking with or without the shoes. It can discount mbt shoes potentially help you with problems you may have with your back, hips, legs, and feet. The mbt sandals shoes can help you recover from injuries to your MBT shoes tendons, joints, ligaments, or muscles. The shoes are also designed to alleviate tension and stress mbt sandals on your lower joints.

Another particular claim buy mbt shoes of MBT is that is you walk one mile in these weight MBT shoes loss shoes it will be as if you walked two miles in ordinary shoes, and you will burn equivalent calories. One thing mbt discount shoes is for sure, users find that after the first few footwear etc times they walk in the shoes their calf and thigh muscles are sore. Also, while you are discount mbt shoes just starting to use the shoes they will feel uncomfortable MBT shoes but that feeling goes away after twenty MBT shoes minutes or so. Once you get used to the feel of the shoes users find that they can discount mbt shoes walk effortlessly and comfortably. The shape of the sole is designed mbt shoes clearance to make you walk with your back straight and your buy mbt shoes stomach flat, and your whole stride shortens up and quickens. These are buy mbt shoes the major effects that owners of MBT shoes mbt shoes sale experience.

A business on sterling silver jewelries may just be the one you are tiffany looking for. It's never that too difficult to find reasonably priced Tiffany wholesale jewelry to get you pandora beads started on your way to being financially independent. The Internet is actually a good place pandora necklaces to start. You virtually spend nothing to find the supplier you are seeking. Once you find your tiffany wholesale supplier, your quest pandora bracelets doesn't end there. If you're interested in improving your health, it mbt shoes review can be beneficial to start from the ground up. Let's talk about your footwear. How does MBT yours rank? Some so-called fitness shoes merely look great, but don't really provide discount mbt shoes any actual health benefits. Other shoes actually make a mbt shoes best prices legitimate difference. If you want footwear that truly helps, MBT shoes are the first buy mbt shoes step toward a healthier you.

What does MBT stand for? Good question. The mbt shoes best prices answer: Masai Barefoot Technology. They're designed to MBT simulate walking barefoot, which helped our ancestors to walk MBT shoes healthier than we do. Modern humans cram their feet into all kinds mbt shoes review of crazy, uncomfortable shoes, and we walk on mbt shoes best prices unnatural surfaces. MBT returns our feet to their natural, healthier mbt walking shoes environment.

MBT shoes actually trigger and enforce the mbt sneakers tiny muscles that cause our bodies to naturally absorb mbt shoes review shock. The patented construction of the MBT soles features a discount mbt shoes unique sensor that causes a simulation of being on uneven mbt sandals ground. It causes an instability that causes the body mbt shoes review to react with slight movements to compensate for the instability. Thus, a "rolling" process MBT begins. This active, natural balancing act causes our bodies to automatically mbt shoes cheap exercise. As a result, muscles are strengthened and toned and posture is improved. Also, we experience less joint stress and back footwear etc pain. Clearly, it's quite a workout, and the benefits are vast.

Many top athletes credit MBT shoes for enhancing their footwear etc training routines. Celebrities are also singing MBT's praises discount mbt shoes for their alleged ability to tone, reduce cellulite and assist in weight loss. Naturally, this has caused the shoes to MBT get quite a bit of attention.

That's very good for you mbt shoes review . That's what MBT shoes do.

Now you see why keeping a natural balance is crucial toward maintaining mbt shoes best prices a healthier you. If you're making your health a priority, then doesn't it make mbt shoes review sense to choose footwear that not only increases your fitness level, but also mbt shoes clearance supports improved overall health? Now that you understand what all the discount mbt shoes hype is about, perhaps it's time to try the MBT experience. Your body will thank mbt discount shoes you.
